How to Join the Territorial Army

Captain Rajpal Singh, TA Officer/ Additional Director, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI)

Becoming a Commissioned officer in the Indian Territorial Army is a two step process. The first step involves PIB (Preliminary Interview Board) and  step two involves the SSB (Services Selection Board). To be more specific:
Basic Eligibility

  • Graduate in any subject.
  • 18-42 years of age.
  • Only gainfully employed whether private or government or self employed. Members of police forces (Including CPOs) are not eligible.
  • Indian Citizens.
Application Process
  • Advertisement published in all major newspapers.
  • Download application from Indian Army website.
  • Apply to respective commands as mentioned in advertisement.
  • You will receive call-up for PIB only on the correctness of application.

Step One  PIB comprises a written examination of two papers. Papers one of English language (subjective: essay and comprehension) and paper two of general studies (multiple choice, may also include reasoning ability questions). Both the papers are of UPSC standard and aspiring candidates should study the basic fundamentals of all subjects. Candidates should aim at minimum 50 percent to qualify; there is no negative marking as yet. Successful candidates of both the written papers are required to appear before an interview board (with two military officers and a psychologist). Positive attitude, good communication skills, body language, truthfulness and convincing ability are the key to success. The panel would generally ask questions based on your background information and suitability for Officer's Like Qualities, which are:

  • Effective Intelligence - Head
  • Reasoning Ability - Head
  • Organizational Ability - Head
  • Power of Expression - Head
  • Social Adaptability - Heart
  • Cooperation - Heart
  • Sense of Responsibility - Heart
  • Initiative - Guts
  • Self Confidence - Guts
  • Speed of Decision - Guts
  • Ability to Influence Group - Heart
  • Liveliness - Heart
  • Determination - Physical & Mental
  • Courage - Physical & Mental
  • Stamina - Physical & Mental
Result of written is declared within two to three days and successful candidates are required for interview in next two days. Final result of successful candidates after interview would be declared in a span of 15-20 days  though intimation letters.
Note: All candidates appearing for PIB should carry along with them, all their certificates in original and copies duly attested by a commissioned officer, medical certificate, domicile certificate, PAN card, No-Objection certificate from employer/ affidavit in case of self employed, income certificate and pass port size photographs.

Step Two Successful candidates of PIB would receive their call-up letter for SSBs within two to four months after PIB and would be tested along with candidates of regular commission in the armed forces. There is virtually no difference in the testing procedures for TA Commission. Successful candidates of SSB would be retained for medical examination thereafter. Candidates who are declared recommended in the SSB will have to wait for another three to four months before they are being allotted an infantry battalion in respective zones. Candidates become officer, the day they join and that is the seniority date as well.

Training  All training activities are post commission in nature:
  • 30 days of Basic Military Training at unit itself.
  • 90 days of Advance Military Training at TA Training Center, Deolali.
  • 90 days of training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradoon.
  • Military courses based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service.
  • 90 days of cross-military attachment with the regular army battalion based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service.
Service Conditions
  • Minimum 30 days to a maximum 60 days Annual Training Camp every year at battalion. Waiver for two years can be granted by competent authorities based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service.
  • Voluntary training attachments for military courses based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service. No duration specified.
  • Compulsory military service during declared national emergencies.
  • Secondment to regular army battalions for a period of five years based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service.
  • TA officers with two years of regular service and if below 25 years of age; have an option of converting their TA Commission into regular Short Service Commission.
  • TA officers can be placed on Special Unattached List for a maximum period of six years. Only 14 days every year is mandatory in that case. Strictly based on willingness of candidates and suitability of service.
  • Seniority of TA officers is not affected on full time or part-time nature of service.
  • Promotion: Captain in four years; Major in eight years; Lieutenant Colonel in 15 years; Colonel and beyond is based on selection. TA Officer can rise up to Major General as per books.
  • No difference in pay and perks during service or training. Pay begins from Pay Band 3 of the Central Sixth Pay Commission.
  • Commission is conferred by the President of India. Status of class one commissioned officer Group A.
  • A TA officer can also apply for civil services examination while being in service and can serve in both the services together. A great opportunity which is never offered to regular officers.
For Ex Armed Forces Officers
  • Age: 18-45 years.
  • Apply through normal advertisement; no written exam; no SSB; interview at the army headquarters; medical test; verification of previous military service.
  • Ex officers can get the ante-date seniority of previous military service, provided they refund the gratuity.
Note: Remember TA is a part-time military concept and do not offer any employment. One should be careful of this and it should never be considered as a back door entry for the regular army
Total time taken from filling the application and  joining is eight to ten months only. A very fair selection procedure, no recommendations whatsoever and no reservations for any caste or community.

  10. Sir,
    Please go through this link.
    http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=74321
It displays an average intake of 20 officers per year in TA. Does it mean that the number of aspirants are so low in calibre or does it hint towards a need to restructure the selection parameters.

  17. hi Surender,
i came across this blog for the first time. very informative. my only concern is the element of BEING GAINFULLY EMPLOYED, is this rule fair? in todays world very few private companies allow their staff to go away for TA duties, due to the stress of performing at work and looking for such companies is a headace by itself.a recent survey showed that upto 71% of people in mumbai do not take their annual leave due to pressure from work. with the sorry state of affairs of our PSU's not many ambitious youth wish to spoil their career working for such coy's.on 1 of my travel trips i spoke to a soilder form the alaska air nationl guard and he mentioned to me that it is not necessary for an individual to have a job in the civial sector, he himself was a petrol station attendend and joined the reserves first and then got the job.no coy can reject anyone for a job because he is part of the reserves.apart from the crieteria for selection, i feel this part must be relooked into. many of my friends working for private coy have been told a big NO for TA. its either TA or the job.

i request the esteemed members of this blog to shed some light on this issue.

  42. Dear Surender sir,

TA officers with two years of regular service and if below 25 years of age; have an option of converting their TA Commission into regular Short Service Commission - Great.

But is there any possibility that TA officers above 25 years of age can get regular Short Service Commission?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hello, I need to ask the author a fairly complex question- does an officer in the TA qualify for the UPSC's IPS limited exam which was first started this year? Apparently 5 years of service and rank of captain is nescessary to qualify, but does that mean 5 years of continuous-full time service? Secondly, does being in the TA allow for age relaxations for a UPSC civil services mains exam? Would appreciate your reply on this. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  44. hi sir
i heard that TA army has become regular army. one can serve nation as full time officer (or one can choose to be a regular soldier in ta or part time officer in ta army). is true? please give me information on this.

    ReplyDelete
  45. TA is only a part-time force.
    5 yrs service, part-time or full-time.
As of now no relaxation in UPSC exams.
Conversion to SSC only up to 25 yrs of age.

  46. Thank you for this nice blog, but the big concern is that whoever is working in govt. or semi govt. organisation, their employer would never allow them to do concurrent job that too for 2 months in a year which is uncertain about which month it is in. ReplyDelete
  47. I am afraid... U ve to convince the bank. Pl read my article titled " Provisions for Govt Employees for Joining TA". There are govt rulings that employers have to motivate people to join TA. That is the only way out. There are bank employees in TA already serving.

  95. Dear Sir,

Private Sector employers have to certify that any difference between the civil and military pay and allowances of the applicant will be paid by them. What are the implications of this?
Will this be applicable only when the civil pay is more than the military pay?
Will there be any instance where they will be expected to serve without getting their full pay?
What are the administrative overheads of the employer?
What are the risks to the employer once he issues this certificate?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Private employers are liable to pay the difference. However, company policies can not be ruled out.
Only if military pay is more. Kind of a vague rule, difficult to apply.
      No military service without pay.
      Employer has to decide overheads.
Risk is self explanatory. Its a national service.

  111. Good day Major Surender Singh

Nice to have a talk with you. You have cleared most of my doubts but as you asked to publish my query in your blog, I am publishing my query so that other TA aspirants get benefited who are in the same profession of merchant navy.
I am in merchant navy since 8 years. I use to have 6 months contract onboard ship and next 4-6 months i spend my time at home. I have checked TA appication form. If I apply as a candidate who is working in private company then I have to take sign from my HOD that company will pay me the difference of civil and military pay. But I am sure as I am working in merchant navy for only 6 months in a year no company employer will sign that clause to pay difference of wages in the application form.
So i am thinking to apply as a self employed candidate. But as a self employed candidate one must show IT Return slips otherwise his candudature gets cancelled. But as I am in foreign company I have never filed IT returns.

    So my questions are
    1) Can I apply as a self employed candidate as I am in merchant navy.
    2) Can I show my company format salary slips as I have never filed IT return.

Thanks in advance for your reply....

    Regards.

  112. Dear reader.. You can apply as a self employed professional as Merchant Navy is a contractual arrangement. Your salary slips can be taken as income and you must produce your IT Returns.

    3) Is the salary paid monthly or weekly or only for number of hours spent?
    4) What is the criterion for calculating the hours/days spent ?
    5) Can I choose to quit voluntarily or do I have to serve for a specified mandatory period ? I am currently employed with an MNC and have about 9 years of work experience
    6) Can I get a commission into the regular Army if I spend a stipulated amount of time in the TA?

I saw the below certificate to be produced from my employer ...Is this mandatory ? Because since I work in an MNC I dont think they will agree to this . Please advice
    (a) Any difference between the civil and military pay and allowances of the applicant
Name _________________S/o _____________________ an employee of this
organization will be paid by us for the period of his military duties in the Territorial Army.

    (b) On return from military duty in the Territorial Army Shri__________________ will
be absorbed in the same or equivalent post which he would have held if his service in
the civil had not been so interrupted and the such military service would count for all
benefits in his civil job, like seniority for promotion, increment of pay, bonus and
provident fund etc. To which he would have other wise been entitled.

  135. Hello Surender Sir..
First of all I want to thank you for such a good post regarding TA..!!
I am a 29 year old physically fit person and aspiring to attempt for TA in December. I have a working experience of 6.5 years in IT and Telecom Industry.

Although I have done some research on TA and also gone through all the comments on this blog but there is something in my mind that have not been asked or answered here, so far.
Its my dream to have the honour of wearing that glorious uniform and to be part of Indian Armed Forces. Its being said that once you are a military personnel then you are on duty 24/7 till you serve. But in case of TA its only part-time job and commitment. My query is - Do TA officers get the same status EVERYTIME as regular army officer? To elaborate, I would like to know that as TA officer can one consider himself as an army man even at times when not on service/training?
    For example:
    1. Can TA officer prefix Lieutenant with his name always?
    2. Can TA officer access Army/Defence sports complex and other such restricted areas with his TA ID card? Actually I am a sportsperson and would like to know if such facilities can be availed always even when TA officer is not engaged in service/training.
    3. Most Importantly, Will a TA officer feel and get the same respect, honour and reputation as regular army officer all the time? Basically what's the difference between a regular army officer and TA officer off service/training/duty??

Hope you got my point here. Such things are nowhere discussed and I couldn't find my answers. Its more related to the feeling of being an Armed Forces officer after joining TA and having the same reputation even when not on service.

    Awaiting your response.. please reply.

Thanks a million for your guidance.
